چکیده

Twenty-seven voices of characters in Japanese animation were analyzed auditorily using a modified version of Laver’s framework for voice quality description. It was found that long-term pharyngeal states (i.e., constricted or expanded pharynx) play an important role in differentiating the voices of heroes and villains. F0 and vowel formant frequencies were measured for the same samples. In an experimental setting, subjects listened to content-masked speech excerpts of the same voices and rated their impressions of gender, age, physical and personality traits, emotional states and vocal characteristics. The correlations among the auditory and acoustic analyses and perceptual experiment results were calculated. It was found that pharyngeal constriction negatively correlated with a number of trait items in the perceptual experiment, including positive personality traits and vocal characteristics. Vowel formant frequencies and mean F0 negatively correlated with some items that were pertinent to physical strength (e.g., “big,” “strong,”).

Articulatory Correlates of Voice Qualities of Good Guys and Bad Guys in Japanese Anime: an MRI Study

This paper examines the articulatory correlates of the Hero and Villain Voice Types, which were auditorily identified in a separate study on cartoon voices, using the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique. In general, the MRI images were in good agreement with the previous auditory analysis results; the major characteristic difference between voice quality settings of heroes and those of v...

Strange Bedfellows: How and When to Work with Your Enemy

There are many examples of parties that are seemingly in opposition working together. In this position paper, we explore this in the context of security protocols with an emphasis on how these examples might produce long-term benefits for the “good guys” and how a formal model might be used to help prescribe approaches to collaboration with the “bad guys.” Collaboration is usually thought of as...

Design principles for secure systems

We try to buy good enough locks so that the "bad guys" can't break in too often. The terms "good enough," "break in" and "too often" are key. We also assume that the police and courts work, so "bad guys" are caught and punished. "Police" in this context is a generic term for any agency that might pursue offenders; it includes the corporate hierarchy or the legal system. Similarly, the "bad guys...

A Model for How to Disclose Physical Security Vulnerabilies

When security vulnerabilities are discovered, it is often unclear how much public disclosure of the vulnerabilities is prudent. This is especially true for physical security vis a vis cyber security. We never want to help the “bad guys” more than the “good guys”, but if the good guys aren’t made aware of the problems, they are unlikely to fix them. This paper presents a unique semi-quantitative...
